Winter Fun Day blowing in

Andover residents will have a great chance to try out those cross-country skis, snowshoes, or sleds they received for the holidays next weekend — assuming some snow falls.
The annual Winter Fun Day is set for Sunday, Feb. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. The free event will take place with or without snow on the ground, and is held at the Ward Reservation, situated in Andover and North Andover. The event is meant to highlight the trails in the area. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, refreshments and a warming fire will be available.

Learn to sing program for kids expands

The Kids Learn to Sing vocal program sponsored by the Young Opera Company of New England is offering an additional class for spring of 2012.
The company says the Monday program met with such huge success that it is offering a Tuesday afternoon class as well. Both sessions will meet from 4 to 4:45 p.m. with a $60 participation fee, and a small performance fee to cover the cost of an accompanist.

Happily cast in an imporant role, an Andover High School sophomore is one of 20 Andover actors who will help teach 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration in the musical "Hairspray!"
Fifteen-year-old Joe Benjamin admires the musical's civil rights history lesson, but certainly doesn't dwell on it. After all, he wasn't even alive in 1962.

Rabbi, Muslim comedian share Laugh in Peace stage

The Jewish Student Union and the Muslim Student Union of Phillips Academy are bringing a special performance of the "Laugh in Peace" Tour to campus. Rabbi Bob Alper, creator of the tour, will team up with Mohammed "Mo" Amer.

Chinese orchestra to perform free concert Jan. 29

On Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m., the Phillips Academy Music Department presents the Orchestra of the High School affiliated to Renmin University of China conducted by He Xiaoqing and Wang Linlin.
The program will include Dvorak's Carnival Overture, Chen Qigang and Liang Zhanhao's The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, Bao Yuankai's See Yangko, a Sichuan Folk Song Radiant Sun, He Rong and Li Wenping's Jasmine Flower, Bedrich Smetana's The Bartered Bride/Prodana Nevesta, Aaron Copland's Hoe Down, Fang Kejie's Streaming in the Flow, and Bedrich Smetana "Die Moldau" Symphonic Poem. The program will also include the Phillips Academy Chamber Orchestra performing John Williams Across the Stars, and Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Spring) with the Renmin University High School students.

A concert entitled "Singing for Our Lives" will honor the 100th anniversary of the Bread and Roses strike in Lawrence, an event of immense significance in American labor history.
The People's Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle will gather Jan. 27 through 29 to honor the great textile strike of 1912. It will perform a concert as part of the "Bread and Roses Centennial" celebration at the Lawrence High School Performing Arts Center, 71-72 North Parish Road, tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
