THURSDAY, OCT. 25

HOME-BUYER ASSISTANCE, meeting, 7 to 8 p.m., to discuss Andover’s newly expanded Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance Program. The program, created by the Andover Housing Trust Fund, helps would-be homebuyers to purchase their first home in town. The meeting is at Memorial Hall, on the second floor of the Andover Memorial Hall Library. All are invited to attend. More details on the

OPENING RECEPTION, for painter Laura Fischman, 5 to 7 p.m., with an artist talk by Fischman at 5 p.m., the Elizabeth A. Beland Gallery at Essex Art Center, her show runs through Nov. 30.

LIVE THEATER, “Memory House,” opens at Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT), through Nov. 18. Tickets begin at $20; MRT.org, 978-654-467. Play is about last-minute stress of completing a college admission essay that forces a mother and her adopted daughter to confront long-hidden family secrets.

FREE MOVIE, 7 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Andover, 6 Locke St., features “Waiting to Inhale,” a documentary on medical marijuana use. Question 3 on the upcoming Massachusetts ballot regards “medical marijuana.” The film has won several awards. All are welcome.

HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS, Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield will hold its annual Halloween Happenings for families - a safe, non-scary, fun-filled, guided family night walk through the forest to learn about the creatures of the night and explore some of the history and myths that surround Halloween. Children and adults are encouraged to come in costume, but dress warmly as you will be outdoors for about an hour. Allow about 1-1/2 hours total. Recommended for children ages 5-10, accompanied by an adult. The program begins in the barn with games and activities that will keep you entertained until your group goes out. Registration starts at 6 p.m., held RAIN OR SHINE. Advance registration with payment is required. No walk-ins, $9.25 per person (adult or child); 978-887-9264. Also happening on Oct. 27.
