Centennial Celebration

Spring Extravaganza kicking off St. A's 100th

---- — The centennial celebration is on at St. Augustine School.

St. A’s begins a year of festivities marking its 100th birthday with its annual Spring Extravaganza on Saturday, March 8, starting at 6 p.m. at the Wyndham Andover on Old River Road.

“Where We’ve Been — Where We’re Going” is the theme for what is traditionally the school’s largest fundraiser of the year. The event will feature a dinner paired with silent and live auctions as well as raffles aimed at raising money to help build the school’s Centennial Gymnasium.

The gym is the latest expansion for the school, which has grown dramatically since it opened in 1914. School officials are hoping to complete its construction by year’s end.

“It’s an incredibly exciting year for St. Augustine School,” Principal Paula O’Dea said in a release. “We’re not only celebrating our 100-year history, but highlighting how successfully our school has evolved to meet the needs of a diversified and growing student body, without sacrificing our core mission — deeply seeded in faith and education.”

Officials say countless faculty members, students, families, local businesses and friends have worked hard to bring the much-needed gym to fruition. To date, the St. Augustine School community, with support from the parish and others, has raised nearly $1.2 million toward the gym’s construction.

But funds still must be raised to cover the $1.9 million price tag. Saturday’s event is expected to help St. Augustine toward its goal, with all proceeds going to support the project.

“Thoughtful gifts and donations from area businesses are the cornerstone of our efforts to construct the Centennial Gymnasium, and we’re so appreciative of the community’s support,” event co-chairwoman Cheryl Jamitkowski said in the release. “We simply couldn’t achieve our goals without them.”

Tickets for Saturday’s Spring Extravaganza are $75. Auction items range from exotic vacation getaways to a host of items donated by local retailers. Raffle prizes will include a year of tuition to St. Augustine, Boston Celtics tickets and an iPad Mini.

Donations for the auctions are still being accepted. Visit www.sas100.org for more information. The public can also view auction items and place a bid online at biddingforgood.com/2014springextravaganza.
