Tulips in bloom for Andover Garden Club

The Andover Garden Club welcomes spring next week with a membership meeting and a look at “The History of the Tulip.” The club’s first get-together of the season takes place Tuesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at South Church, 41 Central St., Andover.

Lecturer and tulip specialist Ila Cox will spotlight one of the true — and fairly inexpensive — signs of spring. Yet their worth, she says, could once be compared to the value of gold, and a country’s economy depended on them. She will explore the history, economics and journey of the magnificent tulip and its intersection with human culture, including a look back at the famed 17th century Tulipmania.

A noted horticulturist and flower arranger, Cox is a plant lover, gardener, garden traveler and a student of garden and plant history. She studied flower arranging with Sheila McQueen, has been an owner of The Potting Shed, is a former chairman of the Flower Committee of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Associates, and is a member of several local garden clubs.

A social time and brief business meeting will precede Cox’s presentation. Admission is free to members; a $10 donation is requested of guests. Refreshments will be served.

Founded in 1927, the Andover Garden Club is a nonprofit, charitable organization that encourages the study and practice of horticulture, landscape design and floral design; aids in the beautification of the town of Andover and helps protect and conserve natural resources. It is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc., and National Garden Clubs, Inc.,
