Organ and choral evensong union at Christ Church

The Andover Townsman

---- — An Organ Recital and Choral Evensong highlight the next offering in the Music at Christ Church 2013-14 series on Sunday, March 30, at 4:30 p.m. at the church, 33 Central St., Andover.

The performance marks the renewed collaboration of composer and director Nicholas White and organ recitalist and Christ Church minister of music Barbara Bruns.

White is chairman of the arts and director of chapel music at St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., and also music director of The Boston Cecilia. He will bring 20 select young vocalists from St. Paul’s School to join the Parish Choir at Christ Church for the performance.

White will direct the combined choir in his own “Magnificat and Nunc Dimitis” commissioned in 2013 by St. Mary’s Church in Newton Lower Falls and set for choir, oboe and organ. Oboist Jane Harrison and Japanese organist Reiko Okamoto will accompany.

The program will also include an organ recital by Bruns dedicated to the memory of her father, a United Methodist pastor and missionary to Japan, who died recently. Selections will include J.S. Bach’s organ chorale with ornamented melody on the hymn “Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier” and the “Prelude and Fugue in E Minor” (“The Wedge”), plus pieces by Jehan Alain. Bruns is also associate conductor of The Boston Cecilia.

The concert will feature the recently installed organ, Opus 137, by C. B. Fisk, Inc. of Gloucester.

The public is invited. A free will donation to support the music programs at Christ Church is welcome. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
