Solar Winds and more at Phillips Academy
An all-French program is on the program when the Phillips Academy Music Department presents Solar Winds on Sunday, April 13, at 3 p.m. in the Timken Room at Graves Hall on the Phillips Academy campus, 180 Main St., Andover.
Featured selections will include what’s considered some of the most engaging music written for winds in the 20th century. The major work on the program is Francis Poulenc’s “Sextet.” Counted among the great works for winds and piano, the composition represents a sampling of the whole spectrum of 20th century music, from Igor Stravinsky to Duke Ellington.
The ensemble will also perform a classic of the wind quintet repertoire — Darius Milhaud’s “La Cheminee du Roi Rene,” described as a vision of medieval France. The less-often performed Eugene Bozza’s “Variations on a Free Theme,” is also planned, as is a reed trio by Jacques Ibert called “Cinq Pieces en Trio.”
Also on tap this weekend, the Faculty Jazz Ensembles will perform a concert on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m., in the Timken Room of Graves Hall. The program will showcase the music of Steve Lacy, Milton Nascimeto, Bob Baughman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Warshavsky, Jim Hall, Raye/Depaul and Peter Cicco.
Both concerts are open free to the public. For more, contact the Music Department at 978-749-4260 or e-mail email@example.com.
