Exhibit captures work of NECC students

A 75-piece photography exhibit titled "Body of Light," featuring the works of Northern Essex Community College students in the Basic Photography and Beyond Basic Photography continuing education classes is being displayed on the second floor of the Haverhill Public Library through Aug. 11.

This exhibit is free and open to the public and can be viewed during regular library hours. An opening reception was held July 5. All photographs are for sale, but will hang until the end of the exhibit.

"This body of work represents the effort and outcome of these students," according to photography instructor Jodi Sammons Feil, a professional photographer and artist with more than 18 years of experience. "Through a series of projects, students were challenged to reach out of their photographic comfort zone and interpret light as a compositional tool."

One portrait, titled "Home Away from Home" and taken by Katie Moran of Salisbury, features her husband Sgt. Michael Moran, a former U.S. Marine, pensively holding a folded American flag. The flag, given to him by the Marines in his former company who he served with in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq in 2006, was flown in the Nimruz Province of Afghanistan in honor of his absence in 2011.

"This photo symbolizes the brotherhood these Marines shared, and the simple reminder of 'once a Marine, always a Marine.' Although he was not present at the time of the flag flying in his honor, it is a constant reminder of the leadership passed on to his fellow Marines at the time of his deployment, and the comfort that it will live on in distant battlefields from now until the end of war," according to Katie Moran.

Because of the popularity of these noncredit photography classes Northern Essex said it is developing a new noncredit photography program set to begin this fall. It will include classes in Advance Light Projects - Intro to Flash Photography, Studio Lighting, Portraits/Weddings/Photojournalism and Commercial/Advertising/Editorial.
