Phillips hosts trio of concerts

---- — Musically-inclined residents can enjoy a free trio of concerts planned for the end of this month on the Phillips Academy campus.

The Solar Winds Quintet will perform on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. with special guest Krista River, mezzo-soprano. This concert, free and open to the public, will take place in the Timken Room at Graves Hall on the Phillips Academy campus, 180 Main St., Andover. Graves Hall is handicapped accessible.

“Join us for a truly unusual and entertaining concert. The theme of the program will be ‘Once Upon a Time,’ and every selection will feature poetry – some of it funny, some of it sad, and some simply strange. Bring the family…this is going to be a lot of fun,” reads a release from the Phillips Academy Music Department .

On Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m., the Phillips Academy Music Department will present senior students performing in seven concertos with piano accompaniment. This free, public will take place in the Cochran Chapel on Chapel Avenue. Cochran Chapel is handicapped accessible.

The program will feature seniors playing movements from various concerti: Catherine Choi performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Yeo Bi Choi performing Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3, Tiffany Lam performing Forsyth’s Viola Concerto, Katherine Shih performing Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto, Ayaka Shinozaki performing Reinecke’s Ballade, Christopher Teng performing Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and Daniel Song performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2.

Finally, as reported in the Townsman last week, on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. the Phillips Academy Music Department will present a faculty piano recital featuring Stephen Porter performing works by Debussy and Chopin. This concert also will take place in Cochran Chapel,

In 2012 American pianist Stephen Porter was named artist-resident of the Cité Internationale Des Arts, and invited to Paris for two months to give recitals of the music of Claude Debussy during the composer’s 150th birthday year.

children's concert The Reading Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Andover's Roland Vazquez, invites people to their annual Children's Concert, on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Parker Middle School in Reading. "A singin', clappin', foot-stompin' good time will be had by all kids from 4 to 104. Music by Mozart, Rimsky Korsakoff, Sousa and others and lots of audience participation. In addition, four lucky children will get a chance to conduct the orchestra!" according to a release from the orchestra. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for kids.
