Haydn work to be recreated by Choral Society

The Andover Choral Society celebrates its 83rd season by performing Franz Josef Haydn’s “The Creation” on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. at the Rogers Center for the Arts at Merrimack College, 315 Turnpike St., North Andover.

The society includes a professional orchestra and Boston soloists. Celebrating his 23rd season with the ensemble, Director Allen Combs will lead them in performing in one of Haydn’s most popular oratorios, considered by many to be his choral masterpiece.

Written in 1797-98, at the culminating point of Haydn’s great decade of composition, “The Creation” was first performed in German. The present translation into English unites Haydn’s picturesque musical language with the colorful and understandable English text, according to the performance group. The words of the Bible are divided between three archangels, Raphael, Uriel and Gabriel, and a chorus of the heavenly hosts. Adam and Eve appear and fulfill the purpose announced by Raphael, according to the release.

Tickets are $20. For information and tickets, call 978-682-4050 or visit andoverchoral.org.
