Songs of Sondheim bring tribute by theater, Andover performer

Andover resident Kathleen Dalton will have a leading role when AFD Theatre presents works by one of America’s best known composers and lyricists, Stephen Sondheim, with its production of Side by Side by Sondheim, opening March 29 in Arlington.

Side by Side by Sondheim is described as “a celebration of the work of Sondheim, recognized as one of the greatest contributors to American musical theater. The production features songs from landmark shows that revolutionized the musical theater with their masterful craft and astounding creativity.”

The shows include West Side Story, Company, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Gypsy, A Little Night Music, and Pacific Overtures, which were all written or composed by Stephen Sondheim.

Dalton will sing some of Sondheim’s most popular songs, including “Another Hundred People” and “Drive a Person Crazy” from Company, “You Must Meet My Wife” from A Little Night Music, and “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story. An active participant in regional theater, Dalton has appeared in AFD Theatre’s production of A Class Act. Recent performances have also included Zombies from Beyond and The Curse Is Reversed, both with the Hovey Players in Waltham.

Performances for Side by Side by Sondheim are March 29, 30 and April 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 8 PM, March 30 at 2 p.m, and April 7 and 14 at 4 p.m.

For more information call 781-646-5922. AFD Theatre is located at 22 Academy Street in Arlington Center. The theater is wheelchair accessible. Assisted-listening devices are available.

Opening night on March 29 will include a post-show wine and cheese reception following the 8 p.m. performance. The 4 p.m. performance on April 7 will be followed by a “talk-back”with the cast and design team.
