'Genius' season to close with chamber concert April 7

Free to those 18 and younger

The Andover Townsman

---- — Concluding its year-long “Portraits of Genius” Season, Andover Chamber Music will offer works for harp, strings, clarinet and flute, by Debussy and Ravel.

“These two composers created a new tonal language that has been called a musical counterpart to the Impressionist paintings and Symbolist poetry. They are considered the most influential French composers of the early 20th century,” according to a release. “Both were grand originals in the history of music, visionaries who dreamed a new world of sound and then brought it into being.”

Principal harpist of the Boston Symphony, Jessica Zhou will make her Andover Chamber Music debut for this concert in which harp plays a prominent role. She’ll be joined by five other internationally acclaimed string players hailing from Italy, Sweden, Australia, and France, who have performed as soloists with major symphonies.

There will be two performances: April 7, at the West Parish Church in Andover, at the intersection of Route 133, Reservation Road and Shawsheen Road; or in a Salon Concert in a Brookline home on Easter Sunday and the last day of Passover, March 31, followed by wine, hors-d’oeuvres, and mingling with the musicians and other guests.

The program includes: Ravel’s Sonatine en Trio for flute, cello and harp (arranged by Salzedo) and Introduction & Allegro for harp, strings, flute and clarinet; and Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 , and Première Rhapsodie for clarinet, arranged for harp, strings, clarinet and flute by Todd Palmer.

Andover Chamber Music describes itself as bringing to the local area concerts with internationally renowned musicians that are “unstuffy, unpredictable and unmatched.” It now offers free admission to all students 18 and younger, as well as a new senior discount for individual tickets.
