People of all ages can get a jump on celebrating Groundhog Day, with a special day of nature activities at Mass Audubon's Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield this weekend.
Families with children of all ages can attend what the sanctuary calls its "all-new Groundhog Day Extravaganza" on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. Ongoing activities throughout the afternoon include nature hikes, snow sculptures, a groundhog obstacle course, crafts and refreshments.
"The groundhog celebration takes place at 2 p.m. in our warm and spacious barn with a very special guest, a live groundhog from Drumlin Farm! She will be joined by a few of her animal friends — a broad-winged hawk and an opossum," according to a release.
People are asked to dress for the weather because many of the activities will be outdoors.
The cost is $9 for adults and $7 for children with a discount for Mass Audubon members. Advance registration is required; call 978-887-9264.
Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary is at 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield.
