Chinese orchestra to perform free concert Jan. 29

On Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m., the Phillips Academy Music Department presents the Orchestra of the High School affiliated to Renmin University of China conducted by He Xiaoqing and Wang Linlin.

The program will include Dvorak's Carnival Overture, Chen Qigang and Liang Zhanhao's The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, Bao Yuankai's See Yangko, a Sichuan Folk Song Radiant Sun, He Rong and Li Wenping's Jasmine Flower, Bedrich Smetana's The Bartered Bride/Prodana Nevesta, Aaron Copland's Hoe Down, Fang Kejie's Streaming in the Flow, and Bedrich Smetana "Die Moldau" Symphonic Poem. The program will also include the Phillips Academy Chamber Orchestra performing John Williams Across the Stars, and Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Spring) with the Renmin University High School students.

Renmin University is one of the most prestigious universities in China, with a distinct focus on humanities and social sciences. Renmin University has produced many influential figures in China's reform and development, and is home to many outstanding scholars in law, economics, journalism and other fields. As measured by admission scores of China's National Higher Education Entrance Examination, Renmin University has consistently ranked among the top three most selective Chinese universities in the liberal arts and social science division.

This performance, free and open to the public, will be held in the Cochran Chapel on the Phillips Academy campus, 180 Main Street, Andover. Cochran Chapel is handicapped accessible.
