Appliqué artistry on display
Vicki Murphy, administrative secretary to Memorial Hall Library Director Beth Mazin, shows off her wool appliqué creations in an exhibit this month at the library, 2 North Main St., Andover.
Murphy, who says she has always loved fiber arts, began cross-stitching and quilting at a young age. She also began knitting several years ago, then wanted to try her hand at rug hooking, which remains a favorite pastime.
She says appliqué work was a natural spin-off from hooking since it took advantage of the wool left over from the rugs she made. Some of her appliqué work is embellished with beads or buttons from other projects as well. While she experimented with wool felt at first, Murphy found it pilled and frayed and she now prefers the durability and finished product that comes with using 100 percent wool.
Several of Murphy’s pieces are on display in the library’s second-floor display case through November. She recently shared her experience with appliqué in a workshop at Memorial Hall Library and hopes to offer more programs for the community in the future.
The first-floor library exhibit space, meanwhile, spotlights artwork by local teens this month.
