The Andover Townsman

---- — Four Andover students will take the stage with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras during its Spring Concert on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall in Boston.

Violinists Tiffany Lam and Miki Nagahara, who are both 17, and cellists Mari Nagahara, 13, and Sasha Scolnik-Brower, 17, will be among the young musicians performing a program that features Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 “Haffner,” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and works by Casella and Ravel.

BYSO Music Director Federico Cortese will conduct the performance.

This season’s BYSO Concerto Competition co-winners will perform as soloists on the Casella and Ravel pieces. They are 16-year-old violinist Isabel Oliart of Newton High School, who has been with BYSO for eight years, and 16-year-old flutist Elizabeth Sperry of Chelmsford High School, a four-year member of the BYSO,

The BYSO’s mission is to encourage musical excellence in a professional and supportive environment by providing quality orchestra training and performance opportunities to qualified musicians in grades kindergarten through 12, while making its programs accessible to underserved communities through financial assistance and outreach.

BYSO serves nearly 500 students from more than 120 communities from around New England and is widely regarded as one of the country’s top youth orchestra programs. It supports three full symphonic orchestras, two string training orchestras, a preparatory wind ensemble, six chamber orchestras, a chamber music program, and the Intensive Community Program, a rigorous string instrument training program within the BYSO that brings classical music instruction to underrepresented communities.

Since 1958, BYSO has been in residence at Boston University. In 2012, BYSO and Boston Symphony Orchestra announced a new partnership for the future of classical music, BYSO/BSO: Partnering for the Future.

Tickets for Sunday’s concert are $25 and $30, and discounted group, student and senior tickets are available. For reservations, call Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory box office at 617-585-1260. For more on the BYSO, visit its website at www.BYSOweb.org.
