Out & About: Paddling through for Father's Day

---- — The Shawsheen River Watershed Association, in conjunction with the Andover Conservation Commission, is hosting a public paddle on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Fosters Pond.

Families are encouraged to give local fathers and husbands the afternoon off to celebrate a leisurely paddle on the scenic pond. A limited number of canoes and kayaks will be available for public use, but people are urged to bring their own boats, if they have them.

Local students capping off 56th BYSO season

Six young musicians from Andover/North Andover will be performing in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras’ final concert of the 56th season on Sunday, June 15, at 3 p.m. at Sanders Theatre at Harvard University in Cambridge.

Boston Youth Symphony will perform Wagner’s “Overture to Tannhäuser” and Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration,” while BYSO’s Repertory Orchestra will also perform Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5” under conductor Mark Miller.

The local students taking part in the Youth Symphony are Mari Nagahara, 14, cello, of Andover, and Ariell Balan, 15, violin, of North Andover. The Repertory Orchestra, meanwhile, features Aditi Kannan, 13, violin; Brett Sawka, 14, double bass’ and Katie Yu, 16, violin, all of Andover; and Yunji Koo, 15, violin, of North Andover.

Every Sunday for more than nine months, the young musicians have spent hours rehearsing together and sharing their love of music with each other and audiences. The BYSO, which has been in residence at Boston University since 1958, serves nearly 500 students from across New England. Federico Cortese is music director.

Northeast Mass. Youth Orchestras auditioning

The Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras will hold auditions for the 2014-2015 Concert Season on Saturday, June 14, at Masconomet Regional High School in Boxford. Music students, of all instruments and at all levels of playing, are invited to audition for NMYO’s eight ensembles.
