A tribute through music

Local family honors daughter, wife, mother

The family of Joni Finegold gathered this past Sunday to celebrate her life while honoring her memory at a special concert to benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston held at Northern Essex Community College.

The program featured Finegold’s father, flutist Michael Finegold of Andover, professor emeritus at NECC, sharing pieces he created, some based on poems written by his late daughter, who passed away from nonsmoking lung cancer in 2012. Joni Finegold was married with two girls when she succumbed to the disease at the age of 42.

Michael Finegold was joined in the concert by members of the Essex Chamber Music Festival, which he founded, and other noted musicians.

Broadway actress Jenny Powers, an Andover native, and her husband, Matt Cavenaugh, performed stage selections, accompanied by pianist Robert “Bob” Lague, former choral and musical director at Andover High School. Powers grew up on the same street in town as Joni Finegold.

Joni Finegold’s oldest daughter, Lillian Finegold-Sachs, sang her original poem “Mothers.”

Dr. David Barbie of Andover, who conducts oncology research at Dana-Farber, spoke at the concert as well.

Additional contributions are welcomed and can be made online by visiting or or by mailing a check made out to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to ECMP, c/o Michael G. Finegold, 11 Lavender Hill Lane, Andover 01810.

Ev’ry child

Should have a mother

Once you lose yours,

you can’t get another.

Your father may marry and get a new wife,

but there’s no one as important in your life.

Her name may have been Joni or Anne.

She might have collected teapots or exotic fans.

You may’ve looked the same

Or nothin’ alike,

with you she may like to cuddle or go on a hike.

But there’s no one exactly like YOUR mother.

Once you lose yours,

you can’t get another.

Your father may marry and get another wife,

but there’s no one as important

in your life!

So ev’ry child

Should have a mother ...
