Kiwanis Club fundraiser to tempt taste buds

---- — Andover residents can get the first taste of the town’s soon-to-open Thai restaurant, One Thong Chai Thai Bistro, next week when the newcomer joins two dozen food establishments for the Greater Lawrence Kiwanis Club’s annual Fabulous Feast fundraiser.

The event, which dishes up samples of area eatery’s popular dishes, takes place Wednesday, April 24, at Wyndham Andover, 123 Old River Road, with cocktails, raffle and silent auction starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the live auction, tastings and awards from 6:30 to 9.

The money raised from ticket sales and the auctions will support children’s programs and charities serving the Merrimack Valley. People can bid on auction items online before the event at biddingforgood.com.

Given the abundance of tasty selections to be served, organizers are setting up the feast a bit different this year. Instead of making all the food available at once, appetizers will be set out during the silent auction. The main courses will then follow, with dessert capping off the festivities at the end of the evening. As an added attraction, Lenzi’s Catering will have a train outdoors from which it will be serving its signature barbecue.

Guests are invited to sample food from as many vendors as they like, while enjoying the entertainment.

For the first time, the event this year will honor a pair of standout citizens.

A humanitarian award will be given to Dr. Dan Hale who is regarded for his work with children at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. Hale has been instrumental in establishing the Pediatrics Center at Lawrence General Hospital, which allows more children to receive specialized care locally, according to the club. The Kiwanis Club is involved in a multi-year donation to the Pediatrics Center to pay for a comfortable gathering spot for families with ill children.

A lifetime achievement award will be given to Bruce Arnold, a member of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame who has been called the Voice of the Merrimack Valley for his work on WCCM and is known for being a mentor to a number of other media personalities. Sports media members Dan Roche and Bill Burt of The Eagle Tribune and North of Boston Media Group will be on hand for the event.

The Fabulous Feast is one of three major fundraisers for Kiwanis, a service club that supports children’s organizations including the Y, Greater Lawrence Boys and Girls Club, a horseback riding therapy program at Ironstone Farm in Andover, Lawrence General Hospital Pediatrics Center, student citizenship awards, student of the month awards, a Lawrence reading program and the Greater Lawrence Education Collaborative. Last year’s Fabulous Feast raised more than $24,000 for these programs, according to the club.

Tickets are $50, with tables of 10 available for $400. To order tickets, visit lawrencekiwanisclub.com.
