Out & About

Conversation with Addison Gallery artist-in-residence

Artist James Prosek, the focus of a new exhibit at Phillips Academy’s Addison Gallery of American Art, will discuss the sources of inspiration for his work as an artist, naturalist and author on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in Kemper Auditorium in the Elson Art Center adjacent to the gallery. The program is open free to the public.

“James Prosek: The Spaces in Between” was unveiled this month at Addison. The exhibit takes its inspiration from the long tradition of natural history painting. Questioning accepted notions of how people understand and interpret the natural world, the exhibition includes paintings, watercolors and specimens, many referencing Prosek’s extensive travels and biological expeditions to places as distant and diverse as Suriname and Kyrgyzstan.

In conjunction with Addison exhibition, which is on display through Jan. 1, Prosek is Addison’s Edward E. Elson Artist-in-Residence for the fall. His show has been supported by a gift from 1963 Phillips alumnus Edward P. Bass, on the occasion of his 50th reunion.

Next month, Prosek will be leading story hour at Memorial Hall Library on North Main Street, reading from his own children’s books, “A Good Day’s Fishing” and “Bird, Butterfly, Eel,” on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. Then on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m., Prosek will be on hand for a Drop-In Family Day at Addison, when children will be encouraged to experiment with materials to create their own bird silhouettes, imaginary hybrid animals and stamp paintings.

For more on Prosek’s presentations or the exhibition, call the gallery 978-749-4015 or visit www.addisongallery.org.
