Creative writing group's workshop Nov. 3

Are you interested in trying your hand at creative writing but hesitant to take the first step? Would you like to explore your writer's voice in a safe, non-competitive, creative space? Come to an open writing workshop to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 6:15 to 9 p.m. at Memorial Hall Library.

Formed initially as an offshoot of a town community program, the writing group is comprised of local residents of diverse age, backgrounds and writing experience with several trying creative writing for the first time. The group meets bi-monthly at various Andover locations.

Under the leadership of Emily Kearns, a certified workshop facilitator, the writing program follows the Amherst Writers and Artists method, using simple prompts to initiate 10 minute - and sometimes longer - group writing exercises. For example, one recent prompt was the word "button" and, while each member told a different story, several were surprised to discover that their mothers were not the only ones to keep a treasured button box.
