Party in the stacks: Andover Bookstore turning 200

Oldest store in Andover to celebrate milestone

The Andover Bookstore, the second oldest continuously operating bookstore in the country and the oldest establishment in Andover, will celebrate its 200th birthday next Thursday, Nov. 12 with an evening party starting at 7.

"Our beloved Andover Bookstore was founded in 1809, the year that Lincoln and Darwin were born," read an e-mail from Karen Harris, events coordinator.

"Come and join our staff (past & present) along with local authors. We will celebrate in the glow of the fireplace with a slice of birthday cake, an evening of memories, and a gathering of our bookstore community." The Andover Bookstore is located at 89R Main St. in Olde Andover Village, near the Lantern Brunch. The next week, Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7, Susan Lenoe and Harris will discuss the history of the bookstore as part of its birthday celebration. "There will be memories from the earliest years, vintage images, and funny stories from more recent times. We are proud to be the nation's second oldest continuously operating bookstore, and we would like to share some of our treasured history," said Harris in the release.
