Operatic afternoon with choral society

The Andover Choral Society presents “An Afternoon at the Opera” on Sunday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. at the Rogers Center for the Arts at Merrimack College in North Andover.

Under the direction of conductor Allen Combs, and with special guest artist soprano Barbara Kilduff, the program will feature some of the best-known and most beloved choral and solo moments in opera literature. Music of Handel, Mozart, Donizetti, Gounod and Verdi will be performed.

Combs has been the music director of the Andover Choral Society since 1989, and has led the group in a diverse repertoire of musical masterworks.

Kilduff is a world-regarded operatic soprano who has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and many of the great opera houses of Europe. She will perform arias from some of the great romantic operas such as Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Mozart’s “Abduction from the Searglio.” The chorus will perform such favorites as the Anvil Chorus from Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.”

Tickets are $20.00 and will be available at the door. For more information, call 978-682-4050 or visit

Organ solos for a Sunday at Christ Church

Organ soloist Douglas Major will be the guest soloist for Music at Christ Church Andover’s next program on Sunday, April 28, at 4 p.m.

Major, who was awarded an honorary doctorate for his service to the church, has given recitals across Europe, the Far East and North America. His recital at Christ Church, on the recently installed C. B. Fisk organ, will include his original composition, “Three Sharp Preludes,” written last year; “Piece Heroique” of Cesar Franck, Olivier Messiaen’s “Vision of the Eternal Church” and the virtuosic “Toccata in F” by Johann Sebastian Bach.

From 1988 until 2002, Major was organist and choirmaster at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., where he trained choristers, directed choirs and played for daily choral services. He now serves as music director of St. Michael’s Church, Marblehead, and is on the boards of various organizations, including the Methuen Memorial Music Hall.
