Love triangle at core of Feb. 10 Valentine's concert

Continuing its Portraits of Genius season, Andover Chamber Music will use its Valentine concert to present what it calls “passionate works by the late Romantic masters, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, two composers whose deep friendship and shared affection for Clara Schumann has been called the greatest love triangle of all time.”

The concert will be at West Parish Chuch, 129 Reservation Road, near the intersection of Route 133 and Reservation Road, on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m.

“When the young Johannes Brahms entered the lives of Clara and Robert Schumann in 1853, something extraordinary took place -- a union of kindred spirits, musical genius, mutual admiration, and more,” according to the organization. “An aging Schumann saw a successor to Beethoven in the 20-year-old Brahms, and Clara found in Brahms a noble heart and musical soulmate sent from God and transfigured by his own music. In Robert Schumann, young Brahms saw a hero and mentor on the brink of insanity and self destruction, and in Clara a divine love which he described as ‘the most beautiful experience of my life.’”

The Schumann works will be Adagio & Allegro for cello & piano; “Rose, Meer und Sonne” for mezzo & piano; and From 12 Vierhändige Clavier-stücke, Op. 85, for four hands.

The Brahms pieces will be Two songs for contralto, piano & viola, Opus 91; Clarinet Sonata No. 2 in E flat, Op. 120 (flute trans.); and Piano Quartet in C minor.

Performers are Aurélien Pontier on piano, Roger Tapping on viola, Julie Scolnik on flute, Natasha Brofsky on cello, Yura Lee on violin, Krista River, mezzo soprano, and Sophie Scolnik-Brower on piano.

The West Parish concert will be the last for Andover Chamber Music until the DeBussy and Ravel season finale on Sunday, April 7.

ACM uses a secure online ticketing system provided by Vendini. Individual tickets are $30 each, and there is a senior rate of $25.
