Open house for new one-artist show at Alpers In-Home

Alpers Fine Art, formerly a Main Street gallery, is hosting an open house Saturday on Nutmeg Lane for a new one-person show.

The new show, Wanderlust, showcases 16 paintings by North Shore artist Jan V. Roy. The paintings in Wanderlust represent a cross-section of Roy's new and recent work, inspired by her travels to locales in the U.S. and overseas, according to gallery owner Peter Alpers.

The exhibit opened yesterday, Wednesday, and runs until Sept. 8 at Alpers Fine Art In-Home, 15 Nutmeg Lane in Andover. This Saturday, July 21, the gallery will host an open house and artist's reception from 5 to 8 p.m. It is free, open to all, and wheelchair-accessible.

"We've converted the downstairs on the same level of the backyard, into a multi-purpose room," said Alpers. "That's how I started, way back when, before the [gallery] on Main Street," he said. I had an in-home gallery back in 1999."

Weekly gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday noon to 5, other times by appointment.

"Before returning to painting in the early 1990s, Jan had a distinguished and successful career designing promotional posters for prominent cultural institutions and events, such as the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Opera Company, Mass. Horticulture, and the Brooklyn Bridge Centennial Celebration. As a painter, she brings the same sharp eye, distinctive compositional slant, and luscious palette that made her posters so recognizably her own," said Alpers.

"I have enormous admiration for Jan," Alpers said. "Her fearlessness has led to solo travel - by bicycle, no less - in such exotic places as Morocco and Myanmar (Burma). The paintings that Jan distills from those adventures incorporate a refined sense of observation, an irrepressible need to see the planet firsthand, and talent to burn."
