An eighth-grade math teacher at West Middle School in Andover has been arrested and is being held without bail as he faces a charge of "felonious sexual assault" involving a child in New Hampshire.
Darrell Keene, of Haverhill and a math teacher at West Middle School, was arraigned today in Lawrence District Court on fugitive from justice warrant and ordered held without bail.
He was taken into custody yesterday on school property about 3:40 p.m. on a fugitive from justice warrant from Stratham, N.H.
Andover School Supt. Marinel McGrath sent an email to West Middle School parents and staff this morning about the arrest, but did not identify Keene or describe the nature of the alleged crime.
In the email, McGrath wrote:
"I am writing to tell you that yesterday afternoon, at approximately 3:40 pm, after school had ended, a West Middle School employee was arrested by police on school property based on a warrant issued in New Hampshire on allegations involving a child. The employee was immediately placed on administrative leave."
"We have no information that the allegations involve any Andover students. At this time, the case is being investigated by the Stratham, N.H. Police. Andover Public Schools is cooperating fully with this investigation. Inquiries regarding this case should be directed to the Stratham, N.H. Police.
"I assure you that the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. As always, the Andover Public Schools staff is ready to assist students and parents of our school community."
Keene was due back in Lawrence District Court June 9.
