About the time the bell rang to dismiss Doherty Middle School students Friday afternoon, March 12, a two-car crash occurred in front of the Bartlet Street school that sent three adults to the hospital.
No Doherty Middle students were involved or injured in the accident, said Principal Theresa McGuinness Darby.
Teachers and Doherty administration flooded Doherty’s front lawn just after 2 p.m., keeping students at a distance from the accident scene.
The crash between a blue Toyota Tundra pickup truck and a gold PT Cruiser happened on Bartlet Street, where a parking lot empties onto Bartlet via Whittier Court, on the south side of the school. As McGuinness Darby surveyed the crash scene, she said she did not recognize either vehicle as belonging to a school employee.
The PT Cruiser’s driver side door was peeled off as emergency personnel extracted the driver, a woman, who was put in a waiting ambulance. The car’s windshield was broken and impact damage could be seen along the driver’s side.
The front driver’s side of the pickup truck was smashed in and the tire flattened. As it was loaded onto a tow truck, it began to leak fluid.
Airbags in both vehicles were deployed in the accident.
Bartlet Street reopened to traffic at 2:45 p.m., after a fleet of responding emergency vehicles had left the scene.
Police at the scene of the crash would release no further details on the crash or its victims.
