Ending a more than 16-year quest by youth services supporters, Andover voters approved $2 million to help build a youth center behind Doherty Middle School tonight.
Special Town Meeting voted 1,422 to 401 to approve the money. A two-thirds majority was needed.
Now it will be up to the private Andover Youth Foundation to finish raising the rest of the money needed for the more than $4 million building. It has reported that it has about $1.8 million, the bulk from a 10-year-old $1.5 million donation from Andover developer Yvon Cormier.
The start of the Special Town Meeting was delayed for nearly an hour, as town workers struggled to deal with a turnout greater than they expected.
