Definitely not the Pepsi Challenge

Spinach salad with strawberries and poppyseed dressing was offered to students at Doherty Middle School last Thursday. It’s a far cry from the Chicken McSchool, tater tots and other items people might still associate with school cafeteria food.

And that was the point.

As part of its continuing effort to provide healthy food and encourage better eating habits, the Andover schools food services workers offered a taste test challenge to students called TNT, Try New Tastes.

While Andover has been moving toward healthier options for a few years, new emphasis on the state and federal level will have all cafeterias offering different options.

At Doherty Middle, as part of TNT, students sampled the spinach salad, honeydew melon, red peppers, and baked squash with onions, craisins and olive oil.

The overwhelming favorite?

Strips of red pepper.
