West Middle students sample career paths

---- — West Middle School eighth-graders got a crash course in job opportunities direct from those plying their craft during the school’s annual Career Day on Monday.

The event brought more than 30 professionals from all walks of life to the school to discuss their careers with students, according to co-organizer Diane Huntress, whose husband, Chris Huntress, of the local design firm Huntress Associates, was one of the presenters.

Participants included a U.S. Navy pilot, firefighters, police, writers and parents with backgrounds in math, science, marketing and philosophy, Diane Huntress said.

The event was fashioned much like a job fair, with students able to visit with the presenters whose careers most interested them.

“It’s good exposure to the kids on all the different fields,” she said. “Even if they don’t want to go into the field, they understand a little more of what’s out there.”
