Rotary, AHS hosting Brazilian exchange student

The Andover Townsman

---- — The Rotary Club of Andover is once again hosting a high school student from Brazil as part of Rotary Youth Exchange, one of Rotary International’s youth programs.

Hermano arrived in August and joined his first host family.

He will stay with two other host families in town before returning home to Brazil in June.

He came to Andover as an opportunity to learn more about another culture.

Already skilled in English, he has been acquainting himself with American culture while also sharing his Brazilian culture, according to local Rotary officials.

Jan McClure, the Rotary Club of Andover’s youth exchange officer, says hosting an exchange student can be an incredibly rewarding opportunity for a family, providing an international experience without leaving home.

Host families provide room and board and share their lives with exchange students, involving them in family, community and cultural activities,McClure said in a release.

“My daughters have participated by living in Denmark and France and our family has hosted, too,” McClure said. “Without a doubt, our lives have been deeply enriched with our new global friendships that will continue for years and years.”

Worldwide, more than 8,000 students ages 15 to 19 participate in Rotary Youth Exchange every year. Rotary International is a global service organization of 1.2 million business leaders and professionals.

The Rotary Club of Andover meets Fridays at 7:30 a.m. at the Lanam Club, 260 North Main St.
