Two of the world’s biggest LEGO fans happen to live right here in Andover. And this spring, they’ll be putting their LEGO know-how to the test when they serve on the inaugural Junior Construction Panel for the new LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston at Assembly Row in Somerville.
Ethan Kutz, 9, and Spencer Belson, 8, are among 12 junior ambassadors who were chosen out of more than 600 applicants ages 5 to 12 to help resident master model builder Ian Coffey at the new attraction set to open May 23.
Ethan and Spencer were selected by Coffey after they submitted applications with a video that answered the questions: “What makes you the biggest LEGO fan and why should you be on the Junior Construction Panel?” The applicants were judged on the creativity and enthusiasm exhibited in their submissions, and the imagination conveyed in their LEGO models.
“I was floored by the number of entries for our Junior Construction Panel contest, and so impressed with the creativity of New England’s young LEGO fans,” Coffey said in a release. “I’ve been building with LEGO bricks since I was a child and I can’t wait to meet the junior ambassadors and see their imagination and building skills first hand.”
The first assignment for Ethan and Spencer will be to help Coffey at the grand opening celebration.
LEGOLAND Boston, a 44,000-square-foot indoor attraction geared toward children ages 3 to 10 and their families, is the first attraction of its kind in New England.
