School is out... summer is in

Students celebrated the end of school for the year Wednesday with some fun in the sun and a ceremony marking the future home of the Cormier Youth Center.

Around 250 students gathered behind Doherty Middle School minutes after the final day of school ended last week to kick off summer with games and amusements set up by Andover Youth Services near the future location of the town's youth center, according to AYS Director Bill Fahey.

After about an hour, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a Cormier Youth Center sign. Yvon Cormier, an Andover developer who donated $1.5 million to the project more than a decade ago, cut a ribbon for the sign as youth and other speakers at the ceremony looked on.

Next year, on the last day of the school, AYS expects to have a similar ceremony for the Cormier Youth Center's official groundbreaking, which this time will mark the beginning of the actual building's construction, Fahey said.
