Top tech school student has scholarship to PA post-grad year

Two weeks ago, Jesenia Interiano was thrilled when she opened her acceptance letter from Phillips Academy in Andover, congratulating her. This office technology senior at the Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover had applied to the respected private school for additional preparation for college.

When she learned they had awarded her a full scholarship into their post-graduate program,“I started crying, I was so happy,” she said.

Interiano applied because she feels she would benefit from further academic instruction, according to a release from the GLTS. Keeping her goal to apply to Harvard University in sight, she has maintained her grade point average at 4.23 and currently is ranked as No. 1 in her class of 289 students, the school reports. She hopes to major in business.

Information Technology instructor John Mejia introduced her to the idea of applying. She spoke to former classmate Adolfo Acevedo, who had also completed the post-graduate year at Phillips. He told her there were many doors this preparatory time could open for her as he currently attends Brown University, according to the GLTS. Guidance Counselor Christopher Plourde met with Interiano about her plans to apply, describing her as a hard-working and intelligent young woman.

“I am confident that Jesenia will be a great asset to their [Phillips Academy] school community, both now as a student, and surely afterwards as a notable graduate,” reported Plourde. “Just as GLTS alumni Adolfo Acevedo did last year at Phillips Andover, Jesenia will make all of us at GLTS proud.”

Besides spending many hours each day on her studies, Interiano participates in a number of extra-curricular activities, according to the s. She is a student representative for both the School District Committee and the Office Technology Advisory Board. She is the president of both the National Honor Society and the Interact Club. A peer Reggie Leader, she likes to help her fellow classmates and can also be seen assisting in the main office as an intern. She has participated on the math team, was a student reporter for the Reggie News team and, as a junior, participated in both SkillsUSA and DECA, where she placed second in her district competition for accounting.
