The Andover Townsman
---- — Elizabeth Millar of Andover, a student at St. George’s boarding school in Middletown, R.I., had an idea over the winter for a fundraising effort at her school that eventually helped raise more than $10,000 for the Red Cross Typhoon Relief Fund.
After last fall’s Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, St. George’s school chaplain Jeff Lewis told students during a service, “We need to do something.”
Millar took the chaplain’s message to heart. She brought her idea for a swim-athon to the school’s community service director Margaret Connor and a plan was put in motion.
On the scheduled day, Millar and fellow volunteer swimmers, many of whom were members of St. George’s varsity swim team, took to the pool. They swam laps for funds pledged by sponsors, who offered either a flat fee or a sum based on the number of laps completed. At the end of their swim, they had raised $10,123 for the Red Cross Fund.
Millar also recently earned a head of school’s commendation for academic excellence at St. George’s following her first semester her fifth-form (junior) year.
