High Plain Elementary School

State is saving a place for students in bookmark contest

Creative juices have been flowing at High Plain Elementary School this winter, as students have created bookmark designs for the Massachusetts School Library Association's bookmark contest.

Nine students have been named semi-finalists in the statewide contest and first-grader Rachel Gealow (her bookmark shown at right) placed an honorable mention at the state level and will be awarded a citation at the Statehouse in Boston on March 9.

Bookmark designs reflect student's favorite activities, lessons or experiences they've had in the library.

"Each school has the opportunity to send three entries in each division, so HPE will be sending nine fabulous bookmark entries," said Gerri Fegan, High Plain Elementary librarian, in an e-mail.

Contest judges include a variety of renowned authors and illustrators, as well as members of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, said Fegan, who also serves as MSLA president.

This is the first time High Plain Elementary has participated in the contest.
