West Middle School eighth-graders have a jump-start on career planning, after visiting more than 20 professionals at a school-hosted career fair on March 4.
Roughly 175 eighth-graders circulated through cafeteria tables last Thursday morning, asking questions of nurses, engineers, financial planners, police officers, bankers and media professionals, including television sportscaster Dan Roche.
Students were drawn to a veterinarian who brought a dog and several employees from Andover Youth Services, who showed film footage of their wrestling program and played a beanbag-toss game.
Prepared with questions, students asked job fair participants how they landed their job, what they enjoy and what is the most challenging thing about what they do. Information the eighth-graders learned at the career fair will be used in curriculum as part of a writing assignment, according to the school.
