Marguerite Momplaisir, newly graduated from Northern Essex Community College’s respiratory care program, believes she is now doing what she was always meant to do.
Momplaisir was one of 28 Andover residents to graduate from NECC on May 17. NECC awarded degrees and certificates to nearly 1,200 students during its 52nd commencement exercises.
A native of Haiti, Momplaisir immigrated, with her family, to the U.S. soon after her high school graduation. Her dream of attending medical school was halted with the sudden death of her father. Instead, she earned two business-related certificates and returned to Haiti where she married her high school love. Together, they then returned to the U.S., where they raised their twin boys and a daughter.
After their three children were educated, Momplaisir attended Merrimack College in North Andover and earned a bachelor’s degree in human services. She worked as a human resources manager for 20 years before losing her job — a loss that soon became her gain.
Momplaisir says for too long she had pushed aside the idea of pursuing a degree in healthcare, according to NECC. It was time, she decided, to make an action plan. She explored the respiratory care program at Northern Essex and eventually enrolled.
An honors graduate, Momplaisir served as a learning peer mentor at NECC and as treasurer of the Respiratory Care Club, coordinating many of the group’s fundraising campaigns. She has also volunteered at Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence, The Andover/North Andover YMCA and Emmaus House in Haverhill.
In addition to earning her degree in respiratory care, Momplaisir also was awarded an associate degree in business management.
