In the books; School year ends with certificates, song and tolling of Bancroft bell

School ends with certificates, song and tolling of Bancroft bell

Summer may not have officially begun until this past Saturday, but for thousands of children in Andover, it was well under way by midday last Friday when they celebrated the last day of school.

The Andover schools wrapped up the year with a host of activities, from water days, field days and class days to trips to Canobie Lake Park in Salem, N.H. and Cedarland in Haverhill. There were orientations for apprehensive students moving on to new schools and celebrations of learning for excited elementary and middle school graduates.

Nowhere were emotions running higher than at Bancroft Elementary School, which was enjoying the laughter and footsteps of students and staff for the final time in its 45-year history.

The current Bancroft, which opened in April of 1969, is due to be demolished over the summer. A new school adjacent to it will welcome its first students when classes return to session Aug. 27.

But that’s two months away. Summer has fully arrived. And another school year is safely in the books.
