Doherty Middle's assistant principal hired from within

Doherty Middle School teacher Andrew Long will get a new desk in the same building this fall, as he's been promoted to assistant principal.

Long replaces Maryellen Iannibelli, who left the district July 16 to become principal of Georgetown Middle School.

"He was one of 62 applicants for the position and quickly became one of eight selected to be interviewed by the search committee," Doherty Middle School Principal Robin Wilson wrote in an Aug. 6 e-mail to parents. "Through that process the committee was impressed to learn of the many leadership responsibilities he has taken on as a teacher, his dedication and commitment to students and the Doherty community and his knowledge and skills as it pertains to creating a school culture of thinking, learning and 21st century skills."

Wilson's letter noted Long recently earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in school administration.

Long, a foreign language teacher and department team leader at Doherty Middle, was hired in Andover in September 2006, according to Andover's human resources department. His salary as assistant principal had not been finalized as of Townsman press deadline.
