Honors for Andoverites on campus
Deans' lists
Andover residents Michael M. Alouane, Mark A. Flanagan, Jun Lu and Sunil Singh were named to the spring dean's list at Middlesex Community College.
All students carrying 12 credit hours or more, who earn a 3.20 grade-point average or higher in any semester, without D, F, I or IP grades, shall be acknowledged by inclusion on the Middlesex Community College dean's list which is posted each semester. The notation is made on the permanent record of each student named. Part-time students receive similar consideration upon completion of each block of 15 credits.

Andover students Mary McGraw, Theodora Givens, David York Jr. and Samantha Amerault were named to the University of Massachusetts Boston dean's list for the spring semester. To qualify for this academic honor, the student must maintain at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
UMass Boston enrolls over 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students in bachelors, masters and doctorates degree programs in over 90 fields of study.

Andover student John Bertorelli earned dean's list recognition at Wentworth Institute of Technology for the spring 2009 semester.
Alumni honors for two at Wentworth
Wentworth Institute of Technology announces that Andover residents David Walsh and Donald Milligan, alumni from the class of 1959, were presented honorary bachelor of technology degrees at the spring commencement ceremony on May 17 in recognition and celebration of their 50th year reunion and induction into the Wentworth Black and Gold Society, which honors alumni marking a 50th reunion year.
Recent graduates
Amanda Marie Chomicz of Andover was one of 418 members of the class of 2009 to earn degrees from Wheaton College in Norton on May 16 during the college's 174th Commencement ceremony. Chomicz graduated with a bachelor of arts in English.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick spoke at the ceremony and told the graduates that they are the hope for which the world is waiting. "The world needs pragmatic idealists today, in spite of the crisis around us, and perhaps because of it. With your training and credentials you could, if you wanted to, spend your whole lives averting your eyes from the daily calamity of less fortunate souls and circumstances," Gov. Patrick said. "Or, you could look clearly at what's wrong, as pragmatic idealists, and set yourselves to make it right."

Christopher John Cole of Andover graduated from Gettysburg College with a bachelor's degree on May 17. Cole majored in environmental studies.
With a student body of approximately 2,600, Gettysburg College is a four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park. The college was founded in 1832.

Connell School of Nursing; Jessica Sannella has graduated with a bachelor of arts in communication from the University's College of Arts and Sciences; Caitlin Toland graduated with a Bachelor of arts in communication from the University's College of Arts and Sciences; James Kim graduated with a bachelor of science in biology and theology from the University's College of Arts and Sciences; James Primes graduated with a bachelor of science in finance and accounting from the University's Wallace E. Carroll School of Management; Jonathan Yost graduated with a bachelor of science in finance and marketing from the University's Wallace E. Carroll School of Management; and Victor Lanio graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science in finance and physics from the University's Wallace E. Carroll School of Management.
More than 3,300 undergraduate and graduate students received degrees at the University's 133rd commencement exercises, held on May 18 in Alumni Stadium on the Boston College campus in Chestnut Hill.

Adriana Margaret Montalbano, daughter of Paul and Nancy Montalbano of Andover, received her doctorate in pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on May 15. She was also the recipient of the National Asociation of Chain Drug Stores Award during the convocation and hooding ceremony, held on May 14 at the John Hancock Hall in Boston. Montalbano is a third-generation pharmacist, preceded by her father, Paul, and grandfather, Tony Montalbano. She has accepted an offer of employment with CVS Pharmacy.

Bowdoin College held its 204th Commencement exercises Saturday, May 23. The college awarded 448 bachelor of arts degrees to students from 36 states, the District of Columbia and nine foreign countries.
Emily Israel Guerin of Andover graduated with a major in history-environmental studies and a minor in Spanish.
Bowdoin College is a small liberal arts college in Brunswick, Maine, and one of the oldest colleges in the nation. It received its charter in 1794 and enrolls approximately 723 students from across the country and around the world.

Seifert column: Character and competence
About 30 years ago, I had a most interesting conversation with a gentleman from France. He was an executive for one of the computer companies in our area. We were very open with each other and could speak our minds. At one point, in our lively discussion of many topics, he shared a comment that has been etched in my mind since that day.
