The Andover Townsman
---- — Some of the state’s best science students will soon get a taste of Awesome Sauce.
Awesome Sauce is the name of one of two Andover Robotics Club teams that competed in a FIRST Tech Challenge qualifying event at Middlesex Community College.
Both teams performed well, with Awesome Sauce advancing to the to the state championship on March 16 at Bridgewater University.
FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The town can see the high school’s teams in action this Saturday, Feb. 2, as well, as the Andover Robotics Club hosts a qualifying event at Andover High School. Opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m.
“Team Awesome Sauce won the competition (in a field of 16 teams) with not only a well built robot, but also strategic driving and coordination. [It was] truly a team effort, which the judges acknowledged by also presenting them with the Inspire award,” according to Minda Reidy, the team’s advisor and a teacher at Andover High School.
“The Inspire Award is the [most] prestigious FTC award - given to the team that truly embodied the ‘challenge’ of the FTC program. The team is considered a role model FIRST Tech Challenge Team.”
The Andover Robotics Club’s second team, Pixilated Tesseract, also won an award, the Think Award, “recognizing the Engineering Notebook which best reflects the ‘journey’ the team experienced throughout the process, from design to build.”
“This team has outstanding entries detailing all their steps: brainstorming, redesigns, successes and ‘interesting moments’ when things did not go exactly as planned,” said Reidy in a release. “Both teams did a great job, and as their advisor, I cannot express how proud I am of them.”
