More than two dozen Andover High students are following in the footsteps of such well known artists and writers as Andy Warhol, Joyce Carol Oates and Ken Burns.
AHS students were recognized with 31 awards for their artwork by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Four students received more than one award.
A even dozen of the awards were gold and silver level, meaning the young artists of these works will have them exhibited in Boston from Monday, Feb. 11 through Friday, April 19 at the State Transportation Building.
The seven gold award winners have the opportunity to compete at the national level.
Panelists selecting student work look for the awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision.
Andover High teachers were calling the awards a great honor given that Scholastic alumni include not only Warhol, but Philip Pearlstein, Cy Twombly, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, John Lithgow, Stan Brakhage and Ned Vizzini.
