Pike School's Ren tallies for MathCounts

The Andover Townsman

---- — Michael Ren, a seventh-grader at the Pike School in Andover, put his skills to the test as part of the Massachusetts MathCounts team that successfully defended its national championship title recently in Washington, D.C.

Ren, the son of Barry Ren and Melissa Qian, was a newcomer to the four-person team. He was selected following his successful individual outing at the state competition earlier this year.

He journeyed to the nation’s capital for the 2013 Raytheon MathCounts national finals in May, competing with his team against 55 other squads made up of middle-schoolers from across the country. Following the written competition, the Massachusetts contingent emerged victorious, beating Washington state by a 0.5 percent margin to retain the national title.

Ren placed 27th out of 224 competitors.

Teammates Alec Sun and James Lin, both of McCall Middle School in Winchester, advanced to the individual competition, with Sun taking home the National Individual Championship while Lin made it as far as the quarter-finals. The team also included Matthew Lipman of Meadowbrook School in Weston, who placed 33rd overall.

The Massachusetts MathCounts team is coached by Joshua Frost of Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington. Ren’s math teacher at the Pike School is Liza Walters. For more on the event, visit www.mathcounts.org or contact Massachusetts state coordinator John J. Hayden at jhayden@fstinc.com.
