Andover: Tinseltown East?: Elisabeth Shue, Thomas Haden Church now film movie here

It all started with a cup of coffee.

A location scout for a new movie stopped by the Dunkin' Donuts on North Main Street near Shawsheen Square, noticed Letourneau's Pharmacy and thought the setting was perfect for a drug store scene in his upcoming movie. Pharmacy owners Cynthia and Shawn McKallagat said the scout inquired about using the site and last weekend the McKallagats learned filming would start early Tuesday morning, Aug. 26.

The film crew was setting up by 7 a.m. and the couple quietly enjoyed a few minutes of Hollywood fame as actors Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Los Vegas, Adventures in Babysitting) and Thomas Haden Church (Sideways, Spiderman 3) did their pharmacy scene.

"It's very exciting," Cynthia McKallagat said on the pharmacy-turned-movie set. "Everyone is just so nice, including Elisabeth Shue who really liked our store and said some very nice things about it."

The movie is called"Don McKay" and it has brought back to town yellow signs with black letters that help direct people working on movies.

Last June, similar yellow and black signs directed crews to a Regency Ridge mansion for filming. That movie, "This Side of the Truth," stars Rob Lowe and Jennifer Garner. A third, much smaller production company (Beagle Productions of North Andover) filmed scenes at the bandstand in the Park for the movie "27 Down" earlier this summer.

Andover locations offer a New England look for movies and the town is easily accessible from the highway for filmmakers. Letourneau's offered its own charm.

"It's really a nice pharmacy — big and clean and it works well for the scene," said location manager Peter Wulff of Los Angeles.

For the scene, the counter was cleared — except for a few McKallagat family photographs that Cynthia kept on the counter — and the actors went to work.

The Letourneau's scene is expected to last only about 30 seconds in the movie, but Wulff believes it will not be cut.

"It will be on the big screen, yes," he said.

Filming for "Don McKay" is happening around greater Boston. In the movie, Haden Church plays a janitor who leaves his hometown after suffering from a tragedy. When he returns home 25 years later, he finds his long-lost love (Shue) on the verge of death and is thrust into a bunch of troubles. In the scene filmed at Letourneau's, Shue's character is buying vitamins but forgets her wallet. Haden Church's character pays for her items.

This indie drama from Animus Films is expected to hit the big screen early next year, Wulff said.

The McKallagats, who live in Bradford, are looking forward to the movie's premiere already. Wulff said the pharmacy name will be in the scene's background.

"This all happened so fast," Cynthia McKallagat said. "That scout called, a few weeks went by, then we got the call that they were coming."

UP NEXT: More Hollywood filming around town is planned for next month. Scenes for "Don McKay" will be filmed at Palmer's on Sept. 11 or 12, according to location manager Peter Wulff. He also said the Carriage House Photography and Main Line Creamery building on School Street has caught his eye for a taxi scene. No date has been established yet.
