Flooding at Collins Center, roof issues at schools
After a busy summer spent repairing school buildings, Plant and Facilities Director Joe Piantedosi says several school buildings still need attention:
A recent rainstorm came close to flooding the entire Collins Center performing arts facility at Andover High School, he said. Water rushes down the hill, toward the center's rear entrance, which only has a four-inch storm drain. Piantedosi and his crew will begin to set up a new emergency drainage route, he said.
Bits of the ceiling at the Doherty Middle School auditorium have been falling, both inside and outside. Town crews have been patching it year after year, Piantedosi said, including installing chicken wire to keep loose pieces in place.
"We're at the end of our rope," he said.
High Plain Elementary has a "totally failed roof," Piantedosi said. The school, the newest in town and built in 2002, has a 20-year warranty for the roof, and Piantedosi has been "fighting" with the manufacturer about the problem, he said. The roof has 104 failed seams.
"It's in pretty serious condition, which has to be addressed before winter," Piantedosi said. "We'll do temporary repairs, to get through the winter."
