Dick Collins, beloved Andover coach and educator, dies

Dick Collins, an iconic figure in Andover and the Merrimack Valley, has died after a period of poor health.

Collins was a longtime Andover School Committee member, teacher and coach. He died Wednesday night.

Collins was a member of numerous halls of fame, including the Andover High School, Mass. State Track Coaches and Mass. State Football Coaches halls.

Andover High's Richard Collins Field House is named in his honor.

The football Coach of the Year Award presented by The Townsman's sister paper, The Eagle-Tribune, is named after Collins, who arrived in Andover as a 29-year-old teacher-coach in 1959.

His teams won more than 400 dual meets in track and field. His football teams had 220 wins, 138 losses and 14 ties in his 37 seasons as head football coach.

Stay tuned to The Townsman as well as tomorrow's Eagle-Tribune for a full report.
