Bookstore running local Waldo hunt

The Andover Bookstore is running a special event this month called "Find Waldo Local."

The goal is to promote awareness of and support for Main Street businesses while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Where's Waldo books, published by Candlewick, in which readers must find on each page a man with glasses and a red-and-white striped outfit.

"We're placing six-inch Waldo standees in local businesses around town. Each business gets a stack of search lists with the names of the participating merchants and 100 cards that say 'I Found Waldo at _____.' Anyone who spots the Waldo standee and wants to play gets a card and a list of places to search," said the Andover Bookstore's Mairead Small Staid. On July 31 there'll be a big Waldo shindig at our book store, with prizes."

More businesses are welcome to join the scavenger hunt. Get in touch with Staid via or through the bookstore's number, 978-475-0143.

Andover organizations that have already signed on with the Andover Bookstore to participate are the children's room at Memorial Hall Library, Sweet Mimi's Chocolates, the Andover Spa, Salon Forza, Learning Express, Orange Leaf, Sauce, Andovers Gift Shop, Starbucks, Bruegger's, My Brother's Pizza Place, Boston King Cafe & Grill, Verizon Wireless and King's Subs & Pizza.

Orange Leaf, Salon Forza and Verizon Wireless has also agreed to donate gift certificates to be raffled off with the prizes.

Collecting 10 cards gets you a Waldo button; collecting all 15 gets a button, a gift certificate for a slice of King's Pizza and entry into the prize drawing.

Would-be Waldo-spotters can come to the bookstore at any point in July to begin their hunt.
