Vicissitudes of a spelling bee

Andover community members enjoyed the typically entertaining adult spelling bee last Friday, sponsored by the Andover Fund for Education.

For whatever reason, teams in the third round seemed to have the toughest opportunities, yet succeeded in spelling an impressive number of words.

Before pronouncing the 10th word of the round, “legerdemain,” reader Stephen Murray, principal of West Middle School, said “I was hoping we wouldn’t get to this word.”

Two words later as he pronouced “eremology” and read that it means a study of desert features, he mouthed “Oh my gosh!”

West Elementary School’s team, “West Spellementary” won the round and went on to win the championship. The winning word was subboreal.

Gone, not forgotten

The honors continue for the boys gymnastics team at Andover High School – even though there is no more MIAA-supported team.

The team won the state championship last month just as the sport was being cut by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association. Seven high schools in the state — including AHS — had to end their MIAA boys gymnastics programs. MIAA said there were too few male gymnasts for the sport to continue in its current form.

But Coach Steve Sirois said town gymnastics pride runs deep and the accolades are continuing. AHS boys gymnast team members were expected to be honored yesterday, Wednesday, March 27, at 7 p.m. at Orange Leaf on Park Street.

The team was to arrive at the yogurt shop in a limousine driven by Garrett Katter, Sirois said. They were to enjoy a free frozen yogurt, and the public was invited to stop by and meet the champs.

“The town is very proud of this team,” Sirois said.
