West Middle School became two-time reigning champions of the Greater Lawrence Education Collaborative’s Academic Bowl.
The Academic Bowl is a yearlong competition between middle school students representing every public middle school in Andover, Lawrence, Methuen and North Andover as well as three parochial schools (Bellesini Academy in Lawrence, St. Augustine School in Andover and St. Michael School in North Andover). Students from one Andover school work with students from another community to form a team.
West Middle School and their Lawrence partner school – Parthum Middle School won 12 tournament points this year, tying for first place with the combined team of the Wetherbee School in Lawrence and St. Michael School in North Andover.
“This collaboration nurtures the social and cultural bonds between communities; challenges, develops and showcases students’ skills and talents; and provides new opportunities for students to explore, develop and succeed together,” GLEC says of the program “With the rise of bullying, driven by low self-esteem and lack of acceptance and understanding of one another, Academic Bowl provides students with an environment where it is safe to openly show their talents and feel good about who they are.”
Matches were comprised of hands-on table challenges, where the students worked to solve physical challenges such as testing velocity of an object to solving scrabble challenges.
There were three buzzer rounds where students matched wits in a quiz-show format.
