Town Talk

There’s still time to help local Scouts feed the hungry.

Andover Boy Scout Troop 79 of Saint Robert Bellarmine Church is participating in Scouting for Food Drive.

This annual event, sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, is running this week through March 9 and will cover the northwestern section of Andover -- approximately 1,300 homes, between Route 495 and Interstate 93.

In recent years, Troop 79 has been working with Neighbors in Need, a food bank that collects items at Dundee Park in Andover.

In 2012, the Boy Scouts collected a total of 3,007 items, which were sorted and packed for the pantry. Last year, the Neighbors in Need pantry was almost bare when the troop delivered the supplies to the warehouse near the intersection of Essex and Railroad streets.

Neighbors in Need food pantries provide food for more than 500 families every week.

Residents in the area may have seen the flyers and red bags this week and can place their donations in the bag for pickup on March 9.
